Africa is one of
the largest land masses on earth, about the same size as Asia. It is
the second most populous continent, having about as many people as North
and South America together. (right: political map
of the continent; the dark blue area bounded by Tanzania, Kenya, and
Uganda is Lake Victoria, second largest freshwater lake in the world;
it occupies about the same area as Ireland)
Passionists are
in six African countries: Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic
of Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania. The Democratic Republic
of Congo is the most populous of the countries where Passionists work,
with 52,000,000 people. The smallest population is that of Botswana,
with a published figure of 1,500,000. The number of Passionist men in
Africa when these statistics were taken several months ago is 122.
